Your eyes are one of the most important elements of your health, and also something many of us take for granted. Given that April is women’s eye health and safety month, we thought it would be only fitting to discuss some of the simplest ways to keep your eyes healthy. Thankfully, there are many different things you can do in order to have great vision and healthy eyes. Taking the time to understand what steps can be done in order to ensure healthy eyes is one of the most effective ways to prevent disease and other problems. According to Prevent Blindness America (PBA), 2.6 million women over the age of 40 are visually impaired or blind in the United States.
Why Women Have Eye Problems
A study conducted by the PBA found that women are more likely to have age-related vision problems, including macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy. There are numerous factors that may contribute to eye problems in women, including hormones and age.
The National Eye Institute recommends that all women over the age of 40 have a dilated eye exam at least once a year. This in-depth exam allows for early detection and treatment of any serious eye problems. Tips for Preventing Vision Problems
There are many different things you can do in order to keep your eyes healthy and prevent bothersome eye problems from settling in. Because April is women’s eye health and safety month, it is an excellent time to reevaluate what you are doing to keep your vision healthy. Given the fact women are at a higher risk than men of developing vision problems, we encourage you to take the following tips into consideration:
- Learn about your family’s eye health history
- Eat the right foods to protect your vision
- Maintain a healthy weight
- Schedule a regular dilated eye exam at our Arlington eye care center
- If pregnant, see your eye doctor regularly and discuss any vision changes
- Quit smoking
